Casemate Tower, 1667-1781. Preservation #736 | Foto
  6a Virmens'kyi Rynok Sq.
It is situated in the second raw of the building up of the southern part of
Sovets'ka Street on the overfall of two terraces. It was rebuilt in 1783 and
changed into the sanitary construction by architect, Ya de Vitte. It is built
of stone. It looks like a stocky cylinder with diameter of 13.4 m and a rectangular
annex. The Tower is 4.5 m high from the side of the square and 11 m - from the
opposite. It has a cone-shaped roof. There is a round column inside the Tower,
in which the ventilation duct is located. The thickness of the walls of the
Tower is 1.4 m. The window openings of the shape of the loopholes are located
along the perimeter of the walls at equal distance. They are covered with the
stone tie plates of the three-centered outline. The entrance to the Tower from
the North is trough one of the rooms of the annex, covered with stone vaults.
The roof is flat over them. The Northern elevation of the annex in the middle
part has three niches with bow-shaped tie plates. The white-stone plate with
the date "1783" is incut over the central one. There are stone walls
of the fence with the same niches (the fence is partly rebuilt) in the level
of the northern elevation of the annex.
In 1963, the restoration works were carried out there. The monument is the only
sanitary construction of XVIII century remained.
