Bell Tower,
1646-1648. Preservation Number #740/2 | Foto
20 Tatars'ka St.
It is situated from the north-eastern side a few meters
away from Pter and Paul's Cathedral. Originally, it has been stone, three-tiered
and covered with a high hipped roof with liukarns, with four pyramidal towers
on the corners, with high fenestrations on the upper tier. In the middle of
the XVIII century, the fronts of the bell tower were decorated in Baroque style,
especially the third tier; corner trowels, pilasters with capitels of the composit
order appeared, the fenestrations were altered (now they are in twos - rectangular
with a "big-eared" platband and round embrasure over it), the pilasters
flanking them and semicircular head molding remind an arch. The cornices are
made of the whitestone profiled blocks. Perhaps, Y. de Vitte directed the works
of altering the Bell Tower. At the end of the XIX century (after 1862), the
shingle roofing on the roof of the bell tower was replaced by the iron one.
It is stone, four-tiered, square in plan, plastered. The first tier is covered
with semicircular vaults, other coverings are flat on beams. The roof is hipped
on the wooden rafters, the roofing is iron.
