Castle, 1724. Preservation Number #754 | Foto
Town of Sataniv

The castle was the main compositional unit of Sataniv in the XVI-XVIII centuries. Its stone fortifications appeared in the XV-XVI centuries and reflected new fortificational trends, which were caused by the development of guns. Small feudal lords built small castles, unlike the other big castles that were build in Luts'k, Kamyanets', Hotyn and Ostrig. They did not account for the relief, but had correct geometrical plans. The regular plans guranteed considerable advantages while defending the castle. It also reduced the perimeter of the walls in comparison to other castels, whose plans completely depended on the relief.
The castle in Sataniv is situated in the northern part of the village on the high bank of the Zbruch River. It was built in the XV century, in place of fortifications from the XIV century. At the end of the XVI century, it was reconstructed and then it received a new five-cornered form with angled pentahedral towers.
In 1720-1724, the owner of Sataniv, Adam Iyeronim Syniavs'kyi, built up the city fortifications and at the same time reconstructed the castle. Between the outside and inside walls there was a ditch. The area of the castle was 1.5 ha. Its three walls had length of 105 m each, the fourth was 85 m and the fifth, on the south, was 65 m.
