Canyon - deep and narrow valleys with steep
slopes, washed away by rivers. Canyon appears under conditions of weakness of
the side erosion or strong abyssal erosion. The weakness of the side erosion
may be caused or by dry climate or water permeability of rocks (sandstones,
limestones, loess), which absorb rain water and decrease its flat flow along
the valley steeps. In the areas, made up of the rocks of different density,
lying aflat, gradation of the steeps may arise in a Canyon. The most famous
canyons are located along the Colorado River in the North America, about 1800
m deep and 380 km long; Bzyb' and Sulak, in Russia in the Caucasus, the top
of the Amu-Darya River (Piandzh and Yazgul) in the Middle Asia.

STATUTE
about the geological nature monument of the state value,
the Smotrych River Canyon
1. General Provisions.
1.1 The geological nature monument of the state value, the Smotrych River Canyon
is a deep narrow valley of the Smotrych River with steep slopes and unique wedging
out of Silurian limestones. It is a place of growing of such rare species of
plants as shyvekeriya Podil's'ka, Hungarian pivnyky, feather grass, which are
recorded in the Red Book of Ukraine.
It became a reserve according to the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the
Ukrainian Soviet Republic No.139 of 21.03.1984.
1.2 The total area of the geological nature monument of the state value, the
Smotrych River Canyon is 80.0 ha. It is located in Kamyanets'-Podil's'kyi Rayon,
it begins in Holoskiv Village, passes through the territory of Kamyanets'-Podil's'kyi
and ends in Tsybulivka Village. It has several users: Holoskiv Village (7 ha),
Housing and Communal services (49 ha), Kolybayivka Village (3.5 ha), Panivtsi
Village (21,5 ha).
1.3 The geological nature monument of the state value, the Smotrych River Canyon
belongs to the nature reserved fund of Ukraine, which is protected as national
property, and is a part of the system of nature territories and objects, which
are under special protection.
1.4 Liquidation, reorganization of the geological nature monument of the state
value, the Smotrych River Canyon, and change of its borders is carried out according
to the legislation currently in force.
1.5 The postal addresses of the land users:

2. The purpose of foundation and aims of the
geological nature monument
of the state value, the Smotrych River Canyon.
2.1 The geological nature monument of the state value, the Smotrych River Canyon,
belongs to the nature reserved fund of Ukraine.
2.2 The main aims of the geological nature monument of the state value, the
Smotrych River Canyon are preservation of the cut of the Silurian deposites,
development of the sedimentary and preservation of rare plants, which grow on
the slopes of the Canyon and are recorded in the Red Book of Ukraine. Article
27 of the Law of Ukraine about NRF (nature reserved fund) of Ukraine.
2.3 The geological nature monument of the state value, the Smotrych River Canyon,
may be used with aesthetic, educational, scientific, nature preserving and recreational
purposes.
3. The regulations of the territory and protection
of the geological nature monument of the state value, the Smotrych River Canyon.
3.1 Any activities, which conflict with the aims and tasks provided by the statute
of the Reserve are limited or forbidden on the territory of the Reserve.
3.2 The economic, scientific and other kinds of activities, which do not conflict
with the aims and tasks of the Reserve, are carried out according to the main
requirements about the environmental protection.
3.3 Owners or users of the allotments of the nature objects, declared as a reserve,
take responsibilities of providing the order of its protection and preservation.

3.4 Carrying out of such kinds of economic activities that can damage the nature
monument and break ecological balance.
3.5 Building of the buildings, which may cause change of the character of the
region and landscape, and bear losses to the nature monument.
3.6 The exploration work, mining operations, transgression of the soil and flora.
3.7 Any littering and pollution of the territory of the nature monument.
3.8 To give the land for building.
3.9 Other kinds of works that can break the natural connections and running
of the natural processes, loss of the scientific, economic and aesthetic value
of the nature monument.
3.10 Abuse of the Law "About the enviromnental protection" causes
the disciplinary, administrative, civil or criminal amenability.
3.11 The dimension of damage, caused to the nature monument, is defined according
to the approved tariffs.
3.12 All kinds of the usage of nature, which are carried out on the territory
of the nature monument, are realized according to the permission of the State
Administration of the Environmental Safety in Khmel'nyts'ka Oblast' within the
bounds, approved in fixed order.
The Statute is worked out on the basis of the Law of Ukraine "About the
nature reserved fund of Ukraine".
