The Turkish
Bastion, the XV, XVII centuries. Preservation #728 | Foto
Staroposhtovyi Uzviz
It is
a part of the North-western city fortifications. It is built on the turn of
two terraces. It is built in the form of four casemate buildings. At the end
of the XVII century, it was rebuilt into the rectangular bastion with wooden
and earthern parapets and embrasures for the cannons. Till 1740, the upper part
of the fortification had been already ruined. In 1753, the commandant of the
Fortress, military engineer, K. Dal'ke carried out the repairs with setting
up the stone parapets on the high multispan arcade. The stone vaults of the
casemate buildings, that began to ruin at the beginning of the XIX century,
at first were reinforced by stone and wooden posts, then were entirely rebuilt.
Later the casemate buildings were used as the storehouses.
The Bastion is almost square in plan with the side of 35,5 m long. The westen
and southern walls are in the form of the arcades - the four-bayed one - from
the west and two-bayed one - from the south. The height of the Bastion from
the side of the southern arcade is more than 11 m, from the western one - it
is more than 9 m. The opposite side of the Bastion from the side of the city
was half the height (now, its ruined remains are filled up). The four buildings
of the ancient casemates have a suite planning structuure. The dimensions of
the buildings are equal: 6 m wide, 9 m long. The entrance to them was located
through the stone tambour at the corner casemate (it is block up). All the buildings
of the casemate were covered with the torispherical vaults and filled up to
the half of their height.
In 1965, the conservation works were carried out there. In the building history
of the fortifications of the city the monument is one of the examples of the
logical completion of the strategic important defensive point on different stages.

Bastion (Itallian)
1) It is corner, pentagonal in plan as a rule, fortification work, that has
appeared in the fortreses in epoch of the Renaissance because of the spreading
of the fire-arms. It corresponds to the corner towers of more ancient fortresses;
2) in the wide sense of the word it is the projection of the fortress construction
in general.
