Tower, the end of the XIV - the middle of the XVI centuries. Preservation #730/5 | Foto
Zamkova St.
It makes
up the northern external angle of the main yard of the Old Castle. Its buildinbg
was finished at the beginning of the XV century. In 1505, a three-storied building
was built on to the Tower from the side of the yard. A window with a memorial
plate over it was made on the eastern elevation instead of mashykul'. In 1544,
I. Pretfes rebuilt the third tier of the Tower and a three-storied building,
adjoining to it. In 1672, the upper part of the parepet with the loopholes was
damaged. In 1771, the north-western elevation of the Tower was built up with
a scarp wall to the height of four tiers. In 1790, along with building of the
battery at the north-eastern elevation of the Castle, the Tower was filled up
with earth almost on 1.5 tier.
Now, the tower is 12 m high, from the side of the main yard of the Castle, and
15 m - from the side of the northern yard. Its diameter is 8.8 m, the stone
walls thickness is 2-2.5 m. The diameter of the first tier is 9.7 m, the thickness
of the parapet wall is 0.9 m. The coverings of the Tower are flat on beams.
There is a conical stone dome over the forth tier. The loopholes are in the
form of the key. The window in the third tier is with a white-stone platband
of the Early Renaissance style. There is a plate with a Latin inscription and
date "1505" over it. The ancient stucco with a geometrical polychromical
drawing remained under the corbels and around the loopholes. The white-stone
profiles of the corbels and level cornice are of the Late Gothic style.
The level coverings, arcature with a parapet, water jets of the upper tier,
and ancient fenestrations has been restored in the Tower. The monument is a
typical example of the angle flanking tower.
